Well, my vacation starts today, or rather it started last night. A little bit unpleasantly because as soon as I sat down to do some work on my web sites, the Internet connection was broken. Spending over an hour trying to fix it plus more time this morning - I discovered that the problem was with my ISP - Roadrunner (Time Warner) San Diego. Forked me very much!
Well, needless to say, I haven’t gotten much done today. Good news is that my new site: dns.orvado.com
finally got listed in Google. Probably due more to me placing links to the site on my other (already indexed) sites than submitting the site to Google. Hopefully the other search engines will follow suit.
Today is my brother’s birthday and we are going out this evening. Won’t have too much time to work on my sites tonight. I’m hoping to get a new edition of my open-source web portal launched in the next few days. More details on that in the future.

Well, situation normal around here, everything is all fubar today. The staging database server basically has the log files full so I can’t properly test my new code that needs to be launched. Oh well, at least it is only a minor change. That is kind of typical of the environment around here.
The funny thing is that we have been having some major performance problems on the staging server. But the staging server is maybe used by 5 people at once. This includes the staging database as well so there really shouldn’t be any problem. My guess is that the problem is the poorly written code that has been placed on the server. There are some serious database design flaws that were introduced by our “crack” team of database administrators.
My vacation starts after today and I wonder if my boss really even knows that I am going. I will give him a call about 30 minutes before I leave to let him know that I have vacation the rest of the week. It will be good revenge for every time he asks me to start and finish a substantial project 30 minutes before I have to leave.

Welcome to another Monday at work. Like most people, I really don’t like Mondays all that much. I guess it’s safe to say that I’m not completely satisfied with my job here. I have been working here for 3 1/2 years now and I have a lot of good stories to share. Off and on, I will be posting horror stories about the work environment here. Just for starters, here’s a little gem for you:
Put in a vacation request for 3 days about one month ago. My vacation starts after tomorrow. Our boss or HR is supposed to inform us whether or not our vacaction requests have been approved or denied. But I haven’t heard a word yet. Last time I had a vacation request, it was the same ordeal - I had to call my boss and HR person just to find out if my vacation had been approved. Yeah, this isn’t really too big of a deal and I know a lot of people have it much worse, but I have some better stories to share in the future.
In the words of one of the immortal heavy metal masters - “I won’t be the one left behind… Can’t be king of the world, if you’re a slave to the grind”

Well, it’s Friday (Thank God) and one of the projects I have been
working on for quite a long while is finally ready for launch. The
project was to create a public DNS web site which allows people to sign-up and receive free DNS hosting. Of course if you want to host an entire zone (Top-Level Domain Name), you need to pay a nominal fee.
It is fully functional at this point although there are still lots of
enhancements I need to make to the site. It should be pretty popular with people who are developing their own web site especially if they don’t have access to DNS servers of their own. Please give it a try if you’d like at dns.orvado.com.

Hey! I think they just discovered how to replace all of the people that have left our company in search of a better work environment or a lower cost-of-living - Gene Therapy. It seems they have learned how to supress a gene in monkeys that supresses the brain’s understanding of how much work is required to receive a reward. You can read more about it here.
It’s no wonder those monkeys were so lazy in the first place. Because they started out working really, really hard and the reward they thought was coming didn’t actually come. Despite what their owners had promised them, they reneged on them without giving it a second thought. Maybe we can learn something from the treatment of these monkeys.

I’m not too sure how much liberty I have to discuss what’s happening at my work. I guess I’ll just try to be vague about my company and it’s employees in my posts on here. There have been cases where a person has gotten fired over their blog postings. Maybe I should change my name or something. Having your real name on the blog just allows your managers to find you too easily.
I’ll change my name back when I am in a more hospitable environment. But for now, I’m afraid I have to disappear under a pseudonym so I can really dish out the dirt. So for the short while, those of you that knew me, prepare to meet the new Die Hard Programmer:
Updated: 12/22/2004
Nevermind, I have scrapped the pseudonym and the name of this blog.

Don’t you just hate those foolios who exclaim “First Post” and attempt to post the first message post on a discussion forum? I mean, c’mon! Don’t you have anything better to do with your life than just post messages to a forum. I guess it is some kind of ego-trip or something to have your message appear first in a discussion forum.
Well I thought I would start off this blog by entering my “First Post” and introduce myself. I am a programmer by trade working in California for a smallish Internet service company. I am currently developing code in ASP (Active Server Pages) and SQL Server 2000. With this blog, I hope to introduce to you some of the daily “going on’s” and what it’s like to live the life of the Die Hard Programmer.
Some of you may not think I’m die hard because I don’t program “real”
applications in C++ or C# or what-have-you. But I tend to think that I’ve experienced a lot of the same issues in my web development programming that others have experienced doing traditional application development.
I’d like to say “Welcome to my Blog!” to all that are new here and … oh
yeah …
