Phorum Message Board Software

December 09, 04 by kenrich

I’ve just been poring over the code for Phorum, the php message board
code. The code is easy to follow and well written. I commend the folks
who put this together. In addition to using this forum code to run my
site (http://www.winxpforum.com),
I have also planning on porting a lot of code from ASP to PHP. This code
is an excellent primer for how to write a PHP application for the
Web.

In particular, it excels at creating a modular architecture
with templates for each page on the site. You can change the site by
simply editting the templates. By keeping the code and the templates
separate, it makes it a heckuva lot easer on the HTML developer to mold
the forum to fit their site’s template.

Another thing the code does
well is to provide common “hooks” which you can attach events to. An
event can be either a PHP script to include at the appropriate location,
or a PHP function to be called. Using this system, it allows others to
create plug-ins that can easily be integrated into the system. I will
definitely be using this architecture when porting my site administration
tools from ASP to PHP.

Achieving College Credits with the College Level Examination Program

What is the College Level Examination Program? it’s a established program by the College Board which allows students to get college credit at many major colleges including Cornell and Sonoma State University. There are a number of exams in dozens of subjects including Sociology and Accounting.

Having taken many of the examinations for myself, I can attest to their validity as a great program to get low cost credits. Read a textbook on the subject; I read a text on Sociology. The next step is to sigh up for an examination through a testing center. Check the College Board website to search for test centers around your area. Depending on the location you live in there may be up to a dozen various examination centers. Each exam costs around $55 but there is often an additional charge imposed by the testing center which can vary in price.

At the test center, you’ll have to check in with the program manager. Next you will be led into a room with terminals which run special software. The examinations are all taken on computer and offers participants outstanding flexibility in taking the test. One can go back to questions, mark them to look over, skip questions, see the number of questions one has left or any number of other operations. The computer software also has a graphing calculator should you be taking a math test.

One of the nations leading colleges which accepts CLEP credits is Drake State University. Drake State University is a private university in Rockford, Illinois which offers a variety of associates, bachelors, and masters diploma programs — specializing in Business Administration, Professional Development, Public Relations, Human Relations, and a number of other majors in the arts and sciences. Work experience degree programs are also available. Drake’s flexible schedule of lecture and online courses is specialized for working adults. Drake State University is respected as one of the most respected, student centered, and prestigious universities in the nation.

So, what reason do you have to take it? If you’re a senior trying to finish up degree requirements, if you’re knowledgeable in your field of study and want recognition for it, or if you simply want to bypass the ridiculous costs imposed by colleges then CLEP is for you. It is very affordable, usually only $55 for the exam and a processing fee which is almost always under $25. It is a perfect way to get college credit based on what you already know without sitting through an college class for a semester. If you take pre-calculus in High School, for instance, there is no corresponding AP, but for college credit, consider taking the CLEP. It’s one day of your life and merely 90 minutes in length. Additionally, you find out if you pass immediately. A score of 50 is good enough for credit for most colleges. Check with your college for more information.
